Why rereading underperforms
The most widely used method is also among the least efficient. Rereading makes text feel familiar, and that familiarity is easily mistaken for knowing it. Going blank in an exam usually traces back to this. Following words with your eyes and being able to produce them yourself are different states, and rereading never exposes the gap.
Retrieval practice: recall first
The most consistently supported technique in learning science is attempting recall before checking. Close the book and reconstruct what you just read aloud or in writing. It feels uncomfortable and unsuccessful โ and that difficulty is precisely what strengthens the memory. Methods that feel easy tend to deliver less.

Spaced repetition: revisit just before forgetting
For the same total time, spreading study out beats massing it. Gradually widening the gaps improves it further, because retrieving something just as it starts to fade imprints most strongly. Intervals such as one day, three days, one week, two weeks are commonly used.
Group into structure
The number of separate items a person can hold at once is very limited, so meaningful groupings beat isolated facts โ remembering a phone number in three chunks is the classic example. Connecting new knowledge to what you already know adds retrieval cues you can follow back later.
Sleep and memory
Memory is consolidated after study rather than during it, and much of that consolidation happens during sleep. That is why all-night cramming can carry a short-term exam yet fade quickly. Cutting sleep to add study hours lowers the efficiency of the study itself, so sleep belongs inside the study plan.
